Region I of the United School District consists of the townships of Brush Valley and Buffington. Brush Valley Township incorporates the rural communities of Brush Valley (formerly called Mechanicsburg), Claghorn, Dias, Heshbon, Littletown, Rico, and Suncliff. Buffington Township is home to the communities of Blaides, Croft, Dilltown, Rexis, Scott Glen, Stumpf's Mills, and Wehrum.

Both townships include major state highway systems, including Pennsylvania Route 259 (PA 259), Pennsylvania Route 403 (PA 403), and Pennsylvania Route 56 (PA 56). Over 80 miles of road are maintained by the local municipalities with a small portion controlled by PennDOT.
